Optimization Questions in BitTorrent Communities

چکیده
A BitTorrent community is a peer-to-peer (P2P) computer network. All users have restricted upload and download bandwidths, and they have different seed libraries, while various objectives could emerge in the network. The behavior of the peers is determined by the BitTorrent protocol which was designed originally for file exchange. However, other applications are also possible as BitTorrent Assisted Streaming Systems or BitTorrent Sync, for example. This paper summarizes the main concepts of studying BitTorrent communities. After a brief introduction to BitTorrent networks and their applications, we will talk about the possibility of modeling P2P networks by simulators. On the behavior of computer networks by solving optimization problems of the underlying flow networks.

On swarm-level resource allocation in BitTorrent communities
BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer computer network protocol for sharing content in an efficient and scalable way. Modeling and analysis of the popular private BitTorrent communities has become an active area of research. In these communities users are strongly incentivized to contribute their resources, i.e., to share their files. In BitTorrent terminology, users who have finished downloading files ...
متن کاملOn Analyzing Free-Riding Behavior in BitTorrent Communities
BitTorrent is undoubtedly the most popular P2P file sharing systems in existence that has been able to attract millions of users. BitTorrent depends on global components for file search, engages a moderator system to guarantee the data integrity of file, and uses an exchange mechanism for file sharing in order to discourage users from free-riding. We conduct one of the largest measurement and a...
متن کاملResource demand and supply in BitTorrent content-sharing communities
BitTorrent is a widely popular peer-to-peer content distribution protocol. Unveiling patterns of resource demand and supply in its usage is paramount to inform operators and designers of BitTorrent and of future content distribution systems. This study examines three BitTorrent content-sharing communities regarding resource demand and supply. The resulting characterization is significantly broa...
متن کاملPublic and private BitTorrent communities: a measurement study
BitTorrent communities, both public and private, are immensely popular in the Internet, with tens of millions of users simultaneously active at any given moment. Public and private BitTorrent communities are managed in different ways – for instance, some private communities enforce sharing ratios, have strict rules for content management, have a certain level of community oversight, and maintai...
متن کاملNPA-BT: A Network Performance Aware BitTorrent Traffic Optimization Mechanism
More than half of today’s Internet traffic is generated by P2P applications, and most of which is the BitTorrent file sharing traffic. The random neighbor selection mechanism of BT puts unprecedented pressure on the network operators and service providers. In this paper firstly we give a theoretical analysis on the impact of neighbor selection mechanism on BitTorrent performance as well as netw...
